A great learning PC program and an extremely affordable price (under $10 on Amazon, $20 at Best Buy stores!) It has a number of chess computer personalities at different strengths, so you can always play a personality close to your level. The computer also analyzes your games to show you better moves. There are a number of courses and puzzles for players of all levels by Grandmasters and International Masters, including IM Josh Waitzkin, and an in-game for much younger players.

If you cannot seem to find a way to get your child away from their Nintendo DS, then it might be a good time to try new tactics. This game will keep them busy for a long time, improve their chess skills, and you can feel better about getting them that hand-held system for their birthday!
